HISTORY
Our association was originally formed as the Sydney Chapter of
the Submarine Old Comrades Association with their first reunion
in July 1935. In 1980, the name was changed to Submarines
Association Australia (SAA). Since that time the association
membership has increased to over eight hundred and there are
branches in all states and territories with the exception of the
Northern Territory. The SAA is a not-for-profit organisation and
relies solely on the contributions and generosity of members for
its existence.
OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSOCIATION
The main objectives of the association are to maintain the unique
“esprit de corps” of the submarine service both nationally and
internationally and to assist wherever possible in matters concerning
the welfare of past and serving members of the submarine fraternity to
lobby Government in service related issues affecting serving members
of the submarine arm.
In addition we encourage social activities amongst our members.
We also have a welfare fund which can be used to assist any member
and/or families of members who require support during times of
hardship.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Each year during the Queen’s Birthday weekend, the SAA holds its
Annual General Meeting (AGM) in a designated capital city. At
this time, members, partners and invited guests, come from all
over Australia and overseas to attend. In 2008 the ACT & Southern
Region branch will host the AGM in Canberra. Celebrations will
commence on the Friday evening of the long weekend and continue
on through to Monday.
